Dennis Ziliotto: The Clown and His Masks – A Photographic Journey to the Threshold of Identity
Behind every mask lies a world. And sometimes, a single mask is enough to multiply gazes, mysteries, and emotions.
“The Clown and His Masks” is a photographic project that explores the liminal nature of the clown: an ambivalent figure, suspended between innocence and the abyss, between attraction and repulsion.

First exhibited in Casale Monferrato in 2010 and later partially reprised in Turin as part of “La camera chiara,” the show features powerful images that both captivate and unsettle.
The protagonist, the clown, loses any comforting function: no longer a mere entertainer, but an ambiguous creature, a mirror of exposed fragility, undefined sensuality, and a vitality fed by contradictions.
The central element of the entire project is the mask: a single one, identical for all the portrayed subjects, both men and women.
And yet, through this one mask, each performer brings a different variation to the theme.
The clown’s identity becomes unstable, liminal, impossible to categorize.
The painted smile begins to crack, explosive joy fades into unease, sensuality blends with discomfort.
Each shot is an invitation to question, to be permeated by conflicting emotions.
Over the years, visitors’ reactions have confirmed this: wonder, curiosity, but also disquiet and, at times, rejection.
This is a show that never leaves one indifferent, one that provokes and invites reflection, opening up a multitude of interpretations.
Today, “The Clown and His Masks” comes alive again in a virtual format, ready to meet new eyes and once more pose the essential question:
What lies behind a single mask?
